BT squares up to Google Voice

Mobile carriers may be watching Google Voice with trepidation, especially as it goes mobile, but one unlikely telco is determined to make sure the search giant does not have it all its own way, writes The Register.

British Telecom has extended its Ribbit platform to cellphones, despite not having a mobile network of its own, with the unveiling of Ribbit Mobile.

This is a cloud-based service that combines Internet voice, smart call routing and voicemail transcription.

Twitter-only mobile device unveiled

A company called Peek is betting $199 that people will buy a device that can only send and receive tweets, according to PC World.

Described as the world's first dedicated Twitter device, the TwitterPeek offers a qwerty keyboard, colour screen, and measures 2.7 x 0.4 x 4 inches.

The always-on device promises four days of battery life "in normal use" and promises nationwide coverage in the US.

Wireless subscribers skyrocket

Indian mobile service providers collectively clocked up 14.98 million new subscribers during September, states TelecomTiger.

Tata Teleservices emerged as the company with the highest additions, at more than four million.

India's total subscriber base for wireless services touched 47.17 million.
