There are three global trends currently evident - evolving business models, a changing workforce and technology advancements.
So said Jan Zadek, senior VP of Enterprise and MD of HP EMEA, during a press briefing at HP Software Universe, held in Barcelona this week.
“New business models are appearing around the globe, for public sector as well as businesses. Businesses are becoming global, looking at cost structures, focusing on innovation. They have to stay ahead of the competition and deliver savings.
“Secondly,” said Zadek, “the role of technology is becoming more important. Technology is strongly-positioned; it is becoming the core of the new business model. It's the way we execute the business and the way we deliver value to our customers.”
Thirdly, he discussed the changing workforce. “Employees can now work virtually, remotely, collaboratively; we are experiencing a new level of collaboration and teamwork, of being able to work across boundaries, a new generation workforce.
“IT turns businesses and government on instantly,” he explained. “Everything and everyone is connected, everyone expects immediate gratification and instant results.”
Enterprise and IT have become one and the same, he added. “We need to respond to continuous opportunity and competition, anywhere, anytime, any way; this is the way the world is going.”
Hand-in-hand with these trends are capabilities that technology must deliver: “Firstly: flexibility - applications and services that adapt. Secondly: automation and the ability to scale up and down. Thirdly: security. We must secure assets, resources and IP.”
Organisations then need insight, to be able to control information and exploit it. “Following this, we need speed, and the right delivery method.”
What is stopping IT are aging applications that are brittle and resistant to change. “Also, rigid infrastructure and sprawl, both physical and virtual. Unknown threats; after all, connectedness is an open doorway. The information explosion - the magnitude of growth is driving up cost, effort and risk. Lastly, bear in mind that most of the stuff that businesses have is custom built - dedicated stacks of hardware and software.”
To combat this, Zadek said HP is delivering application transformation, converged infrastructure, enterprise security, information optimisation and hybrid delivery. “The 'instant-on' enterprise,” he concluded.
