Bursary will provide 10 new IT workers

Johannesburg, 06 Apr 2000

Ten new candidates have been selected to take part in the annual Novell bursary programme. They will be trained by Novell`s training partner, IT-IQ.

The programme, which was launched in 1994, is an annual initiative designed to filter through potential Certified Novell Engineer (CNE) candidates. Those selected complete an evaluation process involving two interviews and a basic test.

Programme co-ordinator, Patricia Leaman, says the company received up to 100 CVs from people hoping to gain admission into the year 2000 group.

Bursary winners will be trained at Novell Authorised Centre, IT-IQ. The training company has been selected as a partner in the programme and has sponsored part of the costs.

IT-IQ also facilitates the training process and Novell pays for the courses and tests, as well as assists with the administration process. Part of Leaman`s job is to track the progress of and maintain contact with every learner.

The bursary is granted on an eight-month basis and students have the option to complete it on a part-time basis if they are employed. Novell says that on completion of the qualification, those who are not employed can benefit from the close contact the company has with corporate partners and prospective employers in need of qualified people.

During the launch of this year`s bursary programme, Manoj Bhoola, education manager at Novell, stressed the importance of cross-certification in the future and told candidates to look towards furthering their education and keeping an eye on the Certified Directory Engineer (CDE) programme.

John Barsby, IT-IQ branch manager in Pretoria, referred to the training company`s focus on people development. He said the company aims to not just train people but them as well, enabling them to deliver in the workplace.

The CDE is a directory training and certification programme that aims to certify people on directory technologies and directory-enabled solutions. A key component of the certification programme is that it builds on candidates` existing knowledge by requiring them to already hold an existing industry certification like the MCSE or CNE.

According to Novell, many companies are installing ubiquitous network systems and so there is a need for cross-certification and knowledge of directory services. The company says that because of this growing requirement from IT professionals, the CDE certification is gaining popularity.
