Bytes Communication Systems was awarded the tender to provide an end-to-end converged communications network for the new multipurpose Mbombela Stadium, in Nelspruit, ahead of the FIFA 2010 World Cup. The consulting engineer for this project is Watson Mattheus, in association with WSP Consulting Engineers SA.
The scope of the project will include a voice, data, cabling, satellite master antenna television and computer network as well as printing and server solutions.
As the Mbombela Stadium is being purpose built for the World Cup, FIFA has stringent technology requirements that need to be met. The stadium also has specific technology needs to enable it to provide international standard services to visitors, such as always on access to a variety of communication solutions, as well as broadcasting capability.
The solution had to offer high availability, scalability and robustness. South Africa is expecting a wave of international journalists and visitors at the time of the event, all of which are accustomed to world-class solutions. Dudley Watson, from Watson Mattheus Consulting Engineers, says he is comfortable that the technology it has selected and the tailor-made solution being built by Bytes Communication Systems will exceed expectations.
Bytes Communication Systems is installing the Alcatel-Lucent OmniPCX Enterprise solution as the basis for the network. The OmniPCX Enterprise system is an integrated, interactive communications solution set that combines both traditional and Internet-based telephony to deliver a full multimedia communication suite on a single platform. The data network is made up of a redundant Alcatel-Lucent solution with Alcatel-Lucent Omni 9000 Core switches and Alcatel-Lucent Omni 6850 L2 and L3 Edge switches to provide flexible, scalable edge switching with gigabit speeds.
“We are pleased to have been awarded the tender for the converged communications network on this project due to our outstanding national support capability and our ability to provide turnkey solutions for our clients,” says George Isaacson at Bytes Communication Systems.
“Bytes Communication Systems is able, in conjunction with strategic partners, to provide all aspects of technology for the stadium, and meet the stringent requirements of the project. We also pride ourselves on our ability to provide added value through our services,” he adds.
The multimillion-rand project is in the final stages of implementation, and will be completed well in advance of the World Cup to allow adequate time for testing.
