As South African companies battle with a chronic skills shortage, Bytes Systems Integration (Bytes SI) is striving to develop its employees' skills and is reaping the rewards as another employee returns with a prestigious MIT qualification.
Winston Anderson, Chief Architect for Sun Software Integration at Bytes SI has recently returned from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) in Cambridge, Massachusetts in the US, where he completed a week long course titled Systems Engineering, Architecture and Lifecycle Design: Principles, Models, Tools and Applications.
“It is a real privilege to have gained from the experience of studying at such a prestigious institution and I hope to use the lessons learnt on this course on our current local projects,” says Anderson.
“The course focused on the design of complex systems and how to assist in the design of these as an architect. The goal of a good systems engineer and architect is to try to assist to build complex systems without making them complicated.”
Included in the weeklong course were explanations of development methods to improve the understanding of systems, as well as methods on how to make them more robust and then to communicate the function of the system and the form it takes to others. During the week Anderson was designated a team of like-minded individuals and was required to model various complex systems.
“The team I was involved with were computer scientists and we looked at a utility billing system as our example. Other teams chose projects like designing an ABS braking system, a tidal wave energy generation system, a combustion engine system, a banking cheque account system and an automated astronomical telescope imaging system,” adds Anderson.
MIT has earned its prestigious reputation since its foundation in 1861 and is widely acknowledged as the worlds leading technology institute. It is a private research university and has one of the largest endowment and annual research expenditures of any university in The United States.
