Bytes Systems Integration, a company in the Bytes Technology Group, is to host the Teradata Data Warehouse Summit on Thursday, 3 February, at Blue Valley Golf & Country Estate in northern Johannesburg.
Bytes has been the sole South African distributor of Teradata for more than 20 years. Teradata is the largest company in the world that is solely focused on creating enterprise agility through database software, enterprise data warehousing, data warehouse appliances, and analytics. It has more than 900 customers and 2 000 implementations worldwide.
“The agenda for the day includes a range of topics that will provide great insight to anyone in the data warehousing field,” says Hendrik Blignaut, Enterprise Intelligence Solutions executive at Bytes Systems Integration. “In addition to a case study on the South African Airways implementation, there will also be keynote addresses by Dr Stephen Brobst and Dr Dave Schrader of Teradata, both internationally recognised experts in their fields. This is the event of the year for anyone who wants to learn more about getting the competitive-edge from their data warehousing technology. It promises to be an enriching experience.”
Stephen Brobst, chief technology officer for Teradata Corporation, is well known to Teradata users in South Africa and is widely regarded as the foremost expert in data warehousing. He will deliver two presentations: “Extreme Data Warehousing: Business Applications and Issues”, and “Roadmap and Strategy for the Teradata RDBMS and Platforms”.
Prior to joining Teradata, Brobst launched three start-up companies related to high-end database products and services in the data warehousing and e-business marketplaces. He has taught graduate courses at Boston University and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in both the MBA programme at the Sloan School of Management and in the computer science departments of both universities. Brobst has authored numerous journal and conference papers in the fields of data management and parallel computing environments and is an internationally recognised practitioner in the area of breakthrough systems implementation. He recently co-authored a book, Building a Data Warehouse for Decision Support, and is currently working on a second book focused on high-performance database design for VLDB data warehouse implementations.
Dr Dave Schrader, one of the marketing directors for the Teradata Solutions group, markets the Active Enterprise Intelligence (AEI) initiative, intended to help Teradata customers derive more value from their enterprise data warehouses by writing new applications and applets for frontline employees and systems. This includes frontline systems such as call centres and the Web, as well as industry-specific points of contact such as banking ATMs and retail point-of-sale devices. He is focused on collecting the best customer practices of AEI, and helping customers fast-track new uses of Teradata. He is also working on illustrating how Teradata brings value to mobile and telematics/sensor deployments of AEI. Schrader holds a PhD in Computer Science from Purdue University, has published widely in the areas of customer management, and presents talks worldwide on how companies can obtain a competitive edge from using technology.
His first talk, “Business intelligence - the next generation”, will focus on leading-edge uses of technology by business people to gain competitive edge. “I will look at pervasive BI, which helps move the use of the database from back-office strategic intelligence to what we call 'operational intelligence' to improve the IQ of frontline people and systems, like Web sites and contact centres, as they connect to data and insights from the database,” says Schader. “I'll provide many customer examples of best practices across industries. I'll also look at mobile BI, social media analytics, and geospatial aspects of data.”
The key concept is applying context to decision-making by everyone in an enterprise.
His second talk, “Business Scenario Investigations”, is an interactive session that involves the audience in solving problems.
“My presentations aim to help business and IT leaders to understand the art of the possible. I'll talk about what other companies around the world have done and are doing to improve the quality and speed of decision-making by using Teradata,” adds Schader. “Arming the audience with information and specifically case studies of successful implementations helps increase their ability to be change agents within their company for better, faster data-based decisioning.”
