Bytes Technology Group acquires storage company Optitek

Johannesburg, 31 Jul 2003

Bytes Technology Group Limited (BTG), the JSE-listed company and member of the Altron group, has announced its acquisition of Optitek, an industry acknowledged consultancy company, specialising in the design and implementation of data storage, archive and retrieval systems for major enterprises.

Optitek has many existing blue chip clients, including implementations at some of SA`s most complex storage environments including Vodacom and Metropolitan. The Optitek acquisition is effective from 1 July 2003.

BTG executive director, Rob Griggs, said: "The acquisition of Optitek is a strategic initiative to add a design and consulting capability for ultra-scalable solutions for complex data storage environments. Optitek will form part of Bytes Technology Networks (BTN), a division of BTG, and will play an important role in aligning our capabilities both locally and in our two UK operations. The ever-increasing requirement for data and graphic storage, multimedia cellular SMS and other developments are driving this market at an accelerated pace. Furthermore, new legislation governing the storage of e-mails and other electronic documents will greatly increase the enterprise need for near-line storage and archival systems."

Mike Broderick, director of Optitek, added: "Optitek needed to make the transition from a small consulting organisation to a mature corporate entity to both realise our full potential and give our existing corporate clients the added security of a listed parent company. Optitek saw BTG as an ideal partner to facilitate this change. Our relationship with the BTN division of BTG has added long-term potential which will materialise from a broader association with BTG and the Altron group."

"The name Optitek will be changed to Bytes Technology Storage with immediate effect," said Griggs.
