Computer Associates International, Inc today announced it is increasing the maximum virtual volume size for BrightStor CA-Vtape to 2GB. By doing so, CA will enable customers to save significant CPU cycles and greatly simplify tape management operations.
Increased virtual volume size conserves CPU cycles by allowing customers to turn off the compression functions required to fit application data into the volumes that were previously limited to 800MB. This CPU conservation can result in cost savings due to avoided or deferred hardware upgrades - as well a reduction in software licence fees, which often are based on hardware capacity.
Additional financial gains result from more efficient and complete use of physical tapes - including reduced tape costs, reduced tape management workloads, and smaller tape management databases.
"The increased virtual volume size provided by this latest version of BrightStor CA-Vtape will really help us keep our data centre costs under control, especially when it comes to backup and disaster recovery," said Howard C Andrews, executive vice-president of Blue Hill Data Services, Inc.
"We appreciate CA`s ongoing commitment to enhancing its data centre management solutions portfolio, since mainframe technology continues to play a dominant role in our overall IT architecture and enterprise computing strategy."
The new 2GB virtual volume size also allows BrightStor CA-Vtape to support up to 13TB of DASD cache buffer, up from a previous maximum of 5TB. This larger cache size means that more data can be kept on disk before moving it to physical tape - thereby improving access and processing times.
"Our customers are always looking for ways to devote more of their finite IT resources to strategic initiatives, rather than infrastructure and operations," said Anders Lofgren, vice-president of BrightStor storage management at CA.
"CA has consistently supported this core technology management objective over the years, and has done so once again with this latest enhancement to BrightStor CA-Vtape, which we are providing at no cost to customers as part of their ongoing software maintenance agreements."
The increased maximum virtual volume size will be made available to customers on 18 May. Additional information about BrightStor CA-Vtape is available at http://www3.ca.com/Solutions/Product.asp?ID=1599.
