Computer Associates Africa has announced the immediate availability of BrightStor ARCserve Backup r11 for Windows - a data protection solution that enables organisations to ensure the integrity and availability of critical business data on Microsoft Windows, Netware, Linux, Unix, and Mac OS X servers and clients.
ARCserve r11 provides enhanced functionality for DAS (direct-attached storage), NAS (network-attached storage) and SAN (storage area network) environments as well as database and messaging functionality.
"The release of BrightStor ARCserve Backup r11 confirms CA`s focus on a marketplace that is seeing significant and ongoing growth," comments Dion Gerrans, brand manager: storage at Computer Associates Africa.
Research authority IDC recently stated that the market opportunity for Windows and Linux backups in EMEA is set to dramatically increase from $233 million in 2003 to $469 million in 2007.
BrightStor ARCserve Backup r11 offers support for the new VSS (Volume Shadow Copy Service) in Microsoft Windows Server 2003 and works with VSS-aware applications and services to create "snap-shot" copies of open volumes and application data sets.
This enables safe backups to be performed without interrupting workflow or compromising the integrity of backup data.
Looking at other ARCserve enhancements, Gerrans comments that the multiplexing functionality, for example, enables IT administrators to decrease the backup window by sending multiple local or remote jobs to write the same media simultaneously.
"This keeps the backup running at its maximum capability for the entire length of the backup process and enables users to backup data without impacting the server or applications that are hosting the data."
Multiplexing also enables companies to make more efficient use of tape libraries, tape drives and cartridges, while restoring data in a stable state in short time frame.
Other ARCserve r11 features include:
Disk-to-disk backup and disk-to-disk-to-tape staging for optimum backup and performance flexibility;
A new "Pre-Flight Check" feature that checks for issues with scheduled backup jobs before the administrator leaves for the night; and
Complete, transparent data protection for laptop and desktop user.
One of the key features of ARCserve r11 is that now offers Microsoft Exchange Premium Agent Add-on, which offers support for document-level backup and restore, therefore, enabling companies to have more control over important, yet individual e-mail documents.
ARCserve r11 also integrates with BrightStor ARCserve Backup for Laptops and Desktops v11 (formerly BrightStor Mobile Backup) for improved administration and device backup.
In addition, the software is integrated with BrightStor storage resource management (SRM) and server replication solutions and with CA`s eTrust security and Unicenter enterprise management solutions, enabling companies to streamline their IT administrative processes.
Concludes Gerrans: "The volume of data that companies have to protect has grown beyond what conventional techniques can handle. With BrightStor ARCserve Backup r11 for Windows we`re accelerating the backup process, while improving flexibility to perform disk-to-disk backup or staged disk-to-disk-to-tape.
