CA continues to evolve mainframe output management with Unicenter solutions

Johannesburg, 08 Mar 2005

Computer Associates International, Inc today announced the availability of three new Unicenter output management solutions that provide a streamlined approach for storing, viewing, printing and distributing essential documents across the enterprise. These cross-platform output management solutions - Unicenter CA-Spool r11, Unicenter CA-View r11 and Unicenter CA-Deliver r11 - help ensure timely report delivery and simplified operations for customers using z/OS mainframes in conjunction with distributed environments.

Unicenter CA-Spool provides efficient management of all printing and spooling tasks throughout the enterprise. Unicenter CA-View is an automated system that allows immediate online viewing of mainframe output. Unicenter CA-Deliver is an online report management system that automates distribution, tracking and printing.

The three products provide browser- and standards-based Web services access to mainframe report content through integration with CA`s Output Management Web Viewer.

"The ability to share information across a multitude of disparate systems without straining budgetary, technical, or personnel resources is critical to the success of our large organisation," said Thommy Andersen, systems engineer at Volvo. "We have come to rely on CA`s output management solutions to streamline our reporting functions, and look forward to powerful new capabilities in r11 for additional cost savings and efficiencies."

The new version of Unicenter CA-Spool features a Web interface and enhancements to critical processing points. Reports produced by mainframe applications in traditional basic text format can now be transformed to today`s standard file formats - including PDF, HTML and RTF - and automatically e-mailed to a user`s desktop for easy access. In addition, document security has been improved with advanced encryption all the way to the printer.

In addition, CA is extending the functionality of Unicenter CA-Spool through a reseller agreement with Xenos, a leading data and document solutions provider. CA will integrate key components of the Xenos d2e Platform that provide Advanced Function Printing (AFP) to PDF document transformation. This solution will enable customers to extract index information and transform legacy documents to the PDF format for more cost-effective printing and mass distribution.

The new version of Unicenter CA-View, which is in beta release, provides flexible indexing of reports based on any customer-defined criteria. This enables users to quickly find the specific data they need within large reports by keying on relevant fields, such as "account number" or "region".

The new version of Unicenter CA-Deliver, also in beta release, includes report profiles and distribution capabilities that support field-level auditing and cross-checking. These audit capabilities are important for compliance with Sarbanes-Oxley and other regulations, which can require highly granular auditing of access to content within reports.

Unicenter output management solutions are available under CA`s FlexSelect Licensing programme and its Measured Workload Pricing option. This option bases licensing costs on measured system usage, enabling customers to align spending with changing business requirements.

"Customers continue to seek ways to further leverage the output of their mainframe systems in order to gain incremental business advantages," said David Hodgson, senior vice-president of Mainframe Systems Products at CA. "CA is responding to their needs through continued investment in the evolution of our comprehensive Unicenter output management solutions."

CA is demonstrating Unicenter output management solutions at the SHARE Technology Exchange this week in Anaheim, California.
