CA establishes CA Labs for advanced research in systems, security management

Johannesburg, 25 Aug 2005

Computer Associates International, Inc (NYSE: CA) has announced the formation of CA Labs, a new organisation within CA dedicated to promoting and performing advanced research in systems management and security for the enterprise.

This cross-business and academia effort will be led by Dr Gabriel (Gabby) Silberman, who recently joined the company as senior vice-president and head of CA Labs, reporting to CA chief technology officer Yogesh Gupta.

"The creation of CA Labs formalises and accelerates our efforts in working with academic research organisations and industry standards bodies to ensure we are developing the most innovative systems and security management solutions for our customers` long-term needs," said Gupta. "We are excited that Gabby has agreed to lead this effort; his experience and credibility in this area is a tremendous asset to our team as we work together to leverage the talent and resources in this arena."

CA Labs will tap the talents of CA researchers worldwide and fund related academic research to support and further establish innovation in CA`s key growth areas. In addition, the organisation will play an integral role in developing and promoting industry standards in these areas. CA Labs` research work will complement the existing research and development teams within CA`s Business Units that predominately focus on nearer-term solutions for CA customers.

"We have a unique opportunity here at CA," said Silberman. "CA Labs will serve as a conduit for innovation, channelling the outstanding talent already present in CA`s development community, and combining it with cutting-edge research by leading faculty and their students, all to the benefit of our customers."

Silberman is a world-renowned researcher with more than 25 years of academic and industrial research experience. He joins CA from IBM where he was programme director for the company`s Centres for Advanced Studies (CAS), responsible for developing and adapting the CAS model for IBM research and development laboratories worldwide. Prior to that position, Silberman was a manager and researcher at IBM`s TJ Watson Research Centre where he led exploratory and development efforts.

Silberman began his career in academia as a faculty member in computer science at the Technion - Israel Institute of Technology. He was a visiting professor at Carnegie Mellon University, and serves in academic advisory boards at several universities and research institutes around the world.

Silberman earned bachelor of science and master of science degrees in computer science from the Technion - Israel Institute of Technology, and a PhD in computer science from the State University of New York at Buffalo.
