CA extends desktop management leadership with acquisition of Miramar Systems

Patented "Desktop DNA" solutions enable IT departments to streamline PC migrations and reduce support workloads
Johannesburg, 15 Mar 2004

Computer Associates International, Inc (CA) today announced the acquisition of privately held Miramar Systems, Inc, a leading provider of desktop migration tools, in an all-cash transaction. Financial details were not disclosed.

The acquisition extends CA`s leadership in the desktop management market with patented "Desktop DNA" technology that greatly simplifies PC and operating system upgrades. Gartner recently named Miramar as a leader in its 2003 Magic Quadrant for PC Data and Settings Migration. Its technology resides on millions of PCs worldwide.

"Our customers have two main goals when it comes to desktop management: reducing PC ownership costs and ensuring maximum returns on their PC investments," said Mark Barrenechea, senior vice-president for product development at CA.

"Miramar`s unique products enable our customers to fulfil these twin goals, allowing them to streamline their technology migrations, accelerate their time-to-benefit for desktop upgrades and eliminate inefficient PC housekeeping."

CA`s desktop management portfolio includes solutions for software distribution, asset management, remote control, data backup and restore, anti-virus and vulnerability management. CA will integrate the "Desktop DNA" technology into its acclaimed Unicenter, BrightStor and eTrust product families and will market the Miramar products individually under the CA name.

Individual users who have moved to a new PC or gone through an upgrade know the pain involved in trying to recreate their desktop environment. This problem is compounded when a corporation has to execute upgrades or enhancements for tens of thousands of PCs. These challenges are particularly relevant today, as an improved business climate is likely to trigger a wave of long-delayed desktop upgrades. Security concerns are also driving frequent desktop updates.

When PCs are replaced or upgraded, their "DNA" - that is, their various system and application settings, network and printer settings, data files and folders, e-mail address books, etc - must be preserved to ensure uninterrupted end-user productivity. When performed manually, this process can be time-consuming, labour-intensive, error-prone and costly, greatly impeding the adoption of new technology.

Miramar`s "Desktop DNA" solutions reduce costly downtime, increase end-user satisfaction, save IT resources and directly address these central desktop management challenges by automatically managing, transferring and maintaining all aspects of PC configuration - thereby simplifying and accelerating replacement/upgrade processes and reducing the total cost of PC ownership.

Miramar was founded in 1989 and is headquartered in Santa Barbara, CA. Its products are distributed in more than 30 countries.
