CA Technology Services helps Munich airport optimise performance, cost-efficiency of IT operations

Johannesburg, 23 Sep 2004

Computer Associates International, Inc today announced that CA Technology Services has successfully completed a complex enterprise management project for Munich Airport that has significantly enhanced the performance and cost-efficiency of the airport`s IT operations.

Leveraging CA`s industry-leading Unicenter technology, Munich Airport has automated the management of up to one million network and systems events daily - ensuring that critical business services remain up and running at peak service levels 24 hours a day.

"The efficient, precise handling of IT events is critical for ensuring our ability to continuously support the intense and diverse range of technology-dependent operations at a major transportation hub," said Marc Lindike, director of system operations at Munich Airport, the eighth largest commercial airport in Europe that serves more than 24 million passengers annually.

"With the help of CA Technology Services, we have been able to achieve our goal of managing a huge volume of events according to well-defined rules. This strategy enables us to sustain extremely high service levels while keeping IT costs under control."

CA Technology Services built Munich Airport`s state-of-the-art management environment using Unicenter Network and Systems Management, Unicenter Automation Point and other Unicenter management solutions. Critical IT resources under management include SAP ERP applications, Oracle databases, Microsoft Exchange and hundreds of other applications. Munich Airport`s infrastructure includes nearly 350 servers, a high-speed large-scale network with 11 000 terminal points and EMC-SAN/NAS. The Unicenter-based management environment also integrates a variety of specialised IT components, including on-board computers installed in passenger transit buses and snowplows.

Events are prioritised, based on type and severity, and dispatched to appropriate technicians, who then use Unicenter and/or device-specific tools to take any required corrective actions. CA Technology Services collaborated with Munich Airport`s technology management team to build this highly customised solution.

"Organisations with very complex IT environments often find that the value returned by their technology investments starts to erode under the heavy burdens of daily management operations," said Peter Rasp, regional manager, CA Germany. "By supporting Munich Airport`s IT to streamline the processes, CA Technology Services played a major role in optimising both the technical performance and real business value of its applications and infrastructure."
