Cable & Wireless Optus, SESAMi.NET connect across the Commerce One global trading Web

Interoperability gives buyers and suppliers access to trading partners across global e-marketplaces
New Orleans, 26 Apr 2001

At the eLink 2001 conference today, Commerce One, the e-marketplace company, SESAMi, the leading B2B e-commerce provider operating Asia`s leading e-hub and Cable & Optus, Australia`s leading integrated communications company, announced they have established interoperability between the Cable & Wireless Optus Marketsite and SESAMi.NET.

The interoperability is made possible by the Commerce One MarketSite e-marketplace operating environment, which powers the Global Trading Web, the world`s largest business-to-business trading community.

The two e-marketplaces bring well over 2,000 buyers and suppliers together and offer trading partners a gateway to further online business opportunities across the Asia Pacific region. The CWO Marketsite is dedicated to supporting Australian and New Zealand markets, while SESAMi is a major player in the Asia Pacific region.

Interoperability makes it possible for trading partners connected to each e-marketplace to seamlessly tap into a larger pool of buyers and suppliers. This significantly increases access to goods, services and new business opportunities for all participants. As additional e-marketplaces are interconnected, trade volume has the potential to increase as well.

"We are turning the vision of Commerce One`s Global Trading Web into reality as more and more e-marketplaces interconnect to link regions, industries and organizations around the world," said Linda Stegeman, chief marketing officer for Commerce One.

"We`re pleased to be working with SESAMi, and Cable & Wireless Optus, two groundbreaking e-marketplaces, to provide seamless e-commerce for organizations in the Asia Pacific region."

The ability of CWO Marketsite and SESAMi.NET to interoperate will be demonstrated in the Global Trading Web Showcase at eLink 2001 New Orleans today and Wednesday. The demonstration highlights the seamless interoperability of the two e-marketplaces.

For example, a buyer can initiate a price-check procedure from the Cable & Wireless Optus site accessing a supplier on SESAMi. The buyer then generates a purchase order and sends it over to SESAMi for retrieval by a SESAMi supplier. The supplier accepts the purchase order from SESAMi and the status is transmitted back to the Cable & Wireless Optus e-marketplace, where an acceptance notice is indicated to the supplier.

Cable & Wireless Optus and SESAMi established the link between the e-marketplaces within one day, highlighting the ease of interoperability between Commerce One powered e-marketplaces. This is key to global e-commerce, as communities do not need to rely solely on organic growth to expand and can provide access to more businesses for greater reach.

Commenting on this new link, Ms. Poh Mui Hoon, president of SESAMi said, "The promise of B2B e-commerce is now even more apparent. With e-marketplace interoperability, the gains from e-commerce will be increased exponentially and this is sure to set the stage for greater proliferation of the industry. Already, analysts are projecting continued growth for businesses that are e-enabled. The easy access to interconnected marketplaces will mean even greater efficiencies in business processes for these companies and better bottom-line results."

Chris Hancock, managing director of and Business Services at Cable & Wireless Optus said, "Cooperation between leading e-marketplace operators such as SESAMi and Cable & Wireless Optus is the key to making global trade easier. We are excited that we can bring the benefits of the Global Trading Web to businesses in Australia and New Zealand."
