Companies faced with linking buildings in a "campus network" have had only expensive choices in the past: Take on the recurring cost of leased Diginet lines or dig trenches and lay new cable.
But increasingly, wireless technology offers a cheaper alternative without compromising network performance or security.
Strengthening its position in the wireless (WLAN) LAN market, Cabletron Systems has released a new building-to-building wireless networking solution designed to enable fast, reliable wireless connectivity between LANs while providing a lower cost, more affordable alternative to leased lines, says Cabletron Systems SA country manager Martin May.
"Cabletron`s new High Rate RoamAbout Building-to-Building Wireless Bridge is based on the 802.11b industry standard and provides 11-Mbps wireless connectivity between buildings up to 10 Km apart," he says.
"Eleven megabits is an important milestone. Now, wireless can enjoy the same perception of strong performance as wired Ethernet."
The product offers SNMP and RMON functionality and optional, enhanced 128-bit encryption, which addresses the security concerns that typically come up in debates on wireless networks` merits.
RoamAbout includes one access point (a Layer 2 bridge), one modular radio card, two cables to connect to the network interface cards to the wired LAN, and software that manages access points and measures signal strength.
