Caltex SA adds fuel to growing SAP HR base

Johannesburg, 28 Jul 1998

SAP Human Resources (HR) is gaining momentum in South Africa as an increasing number of major corporations select the software solution to manage their HR needs.

Caltex SA is the latest company to choose SAP as its HR solution to manage human resources, benefits and payroll for Caltex`s approximately 1 900 people throughout Southern Africa.

The system is now live after what a spokesperson for implementation partner, Ernst and Young CSI, described as "the smoothest human resources implementation in my experience".

The SAP HR module has formed an integral part of many other recent South African R/3 implementations, including those at Polifin, Amplats, Transvaal Sugar Limited (TSB), Sasol Oil, SAPPI, Kynoch, Saldanha Steel, Iscor and Mondi Paper, reflecting the growing acceptance of SAP by the local human resources community.

SAP HR provides solutions for planning and managing a company`s human resources. It uses integrated applications that cover all personnel management tasks, helping to simplify and speed these processes. The module can be used either alone, or combined with other solutions.

Caltex SA selected the product for its market-leading strategic human-resources functionality, as well as its scalability and integration with SAP R/3 financials, controlling and general ledger. It will also meet Caltex`s year-2000 compliance requirement.

The HR module was implemented as part of a larger SAP migration project. Caltex recently moved from R/2 to R/3 to benefit from the new functionality of SAP R/3 and to improve all the core areas of its business.

"The HR system went live during the first week of March, and our first live payroll was completed very successfully," says Richard Searle, HR implementation project manager of Caltex SA. "Our ACB payments were correctly made, payslips printed and we completed the postings to the General Ledger with minimal trouble and delay."

Gaining a robust platform for human resources and payroll will allow the company to manage its information confidently.

In addition, the new system will provide greater decision support for line managers and executives. Enabled by access to real-time data, SAP HR will provide Caltex SA with greater insight into how its human resources are deployed and into the overall cost of doing business.

SAP HR provides a unified view of human resources data, improving data accuracy and productivity while virtually eliminating redundant data entry. It also automates many routine clerical human resources tasks, freeing up human resources professionals for tasks of greater value

SAP is the leading global human resources solutions provider with more than 2 500 customers in 50 countries.
