Can wireless notebooks really make a difference to my SME?

Ian Rayner, Axiz notebook product manager, urges SMEs to embrace mobile technology
Johannesburg, 07 Jul 2004

Gartner estimates that it takes as little as one to three hours per week of additional work such as checking e-mail from home or processing orders while on the road to justify the additional cost of a notebook. Add the steadily declining cost of notebook ownership, including both hardware and technical support costs, and the case for mobility is clear.

"The use of mobile computing is one of today`s fastest growing business trends and for good reason. We believe that mobile computing is not only about technology innovation. It is an important business solution," says Ian Rayner, notebook product manager at Axiz.

Rayner believes that productivity in a small and medium-sized business is not about where you are but rather what you do. "By using a notebook you have the freedom and flexibility to work when and where you need to, respond to customers immediately and stay connected to business-critical information."

The key to mobile technology is undoubtedly about being wireless. The ability to connect wirelessly is now a viable option for small and medium businesses thanks to Intel`s new Centrino mobile technology.

This wireless technology lets busy employees take advantage of the increased freedom and flexibility their notebooks provide, whether they are in the office, at home, or on the go. "It`s what is on the inside that counts," says Rayner. "Notebooks built on Intel Centrino mobile technology feature powerful Intel Pentium M processors, Intel 855 chipsets, and integrated wireless networking."

Built from the ground up for mobility, Intel Centrino mobile technology enables extended battery life and breakthrough mobile performance in thinner, lighter designs that are easy to carry and easy to use on the go. With superior low power features and integrated wireless capabilities, Intel Centrino Mobile technology allows for continuous, hassle-free mobile computing.

"What this means for SMEs is more efficient use of resources and quicker time-to-market solutions. Enhanced service for customers and improved work/life balance. It gives you an `in office` experience wherever you are, providing true mobility that will make a difference to your competitiveness," continues Rayner.

Perhaps one of the most impressive features is extended battery life. The intelligent power distribution focuses system power where the processor needs it and shuts down anything not being used, while the enhanced Intel SpeedStep technology provides multiple voltage and frequency operating points to better match performance to application demand.

Rayner acknowledges that SMEs may remain sceptical and urges them to consider how new technology will improve their business. In a study entitled "Inside the SMB Mind" respondents reported that technology is a powerful way to differentiate business; they also view it as a productivity booster and believe their company`s future completely relies on it.

"Intel is expanding its history of innovation with new notebooks designed specifically for the mobile world. This technology allows users to work, play and connect without wires and choose from a whole new generation of thin and light notebooks that deliver breakthrough mobile performance," concludes Rayner.
