Computer Associates International, Inc (NYSE: CA) today announced that xwave, an Aliant company (TSX: AIT) and one of Canada`s largest IT services firms, has reduced its annual offsite tape storage costs by 74% and improved the reliability and performance of its data protection processes with BrightStor CA-Vtape Virtual Tape System.
By using BrightStor CA-Vtape to intelligently manage large volumes of data across its storage infrastructure, xwave has also reduced its remaining physical tape environment by 82% while eliminating the need for vault expansion.
"The cost of CA`s BrightStor CA-Vtape was nominal compared with the tremendous savings and performance improvements it has enabled us to achieve," said Ivan Broz, xwave`s general manager of operations. "I would strongly recommend CA`s BrightStor technology to any organisation seeking to streamline data centre operations and better safeguard critical information assets."
To accommodate a projected annual increase of more than 15% in both onsite and offsite storage, xwave was faced with having to expand its offsite vault capacity. With BrightStor CA-Vtape, xwave reduced its existing vault capacity by 73%, eliminating the need for vault expansion and freeing up more than 600 square feet of valuable data centre floor space.
Since BrightStor CA-Vtape, the number of tapes that required daily manual intervention declined by more than 90%. By dramatically reducing the physical handling of tape, xwave has successfully re-allocated staff to higher-value tasks.
BrightStor CA-Vtape Virtual Tape System stacks multiple "virtual volumes" of storage on a single physical tape. This enables customers to fully leverage their existing storage hardware and eliminate or defer new hardware purchases, while reducing floor space consumption and improving processing performance.
"Xwave`s deployment of BrightStor CA-Vtape dramatically illustrates the tremendous ROI that customers can realise by exploiting storage management," said Joanne Moretti, general manager, Computer Associates Canada. "Streamlining storage processes is especially critical as IT organisations seek to shift limited resources from low-value maintenance tasks to higher-value activities."
Xwave, an Aliant company, delivers complete IT services to clients through three service lines: systems integration and software engineering; infrastructure services; and product fulfilment. These areas offer clients a broad delivery capability: xwave plans, designs, builds and operates IT solutions that span both corporate and operational systems and fulfil all infrastructure needs. With more than $365 million in revenues and 2 000 people, xwave is one of the largest IT services companies in Canada. More information can be found at www.xwave.com.
