Careers under the spotlight for Pretoria learners

Johannesburg, 18 Apr 2007

Thousands of high school learners in Pretoria will get a close look at the wide range of careers on offer to them when they attend the Vodacom Careers Expo this week.

The exhibition, which runs from 18 to 20 April at the Tshwane Events Centre, will provide a unique opportunity for some 6 500 Grade 12 learners from 100 schools in the greater Pretoria area to gain a deeper understanding of what is involved in the many career choices that are open to them.

A range of some 100 companies exhibiting will ensure that a wide range of careers are covered, from those in the information technology field such as engineering, programming, software development, hardware manufacturing, business analysis, information technology professional services, to support services such as finance and catering.

A unique feature of the Vodacom Career Expo will be the opportunity for direct interaction between learners and the professionals hosting stalls who work in the various careers. Their experience will give learners a "hands-on" insight into the careers that they will be explaining.

Explaining Vodacom's sponsorship of the Careers Expo, Managing Executive of Vodacom's Corporate Social Responsibility, Monde Mama, said: "South Africa faces a discrepancy between vacancies for skilled jobs on the one hand, and millions of job seekers who lack the necessary skills to fill them on the other. Vodacom is deeply concerned about this gap between the skills required and those that are available in the ICT sector and the general industry.

"We have launched the Vodacom Careers Expo as an initiative to empower high school learners with the knowledge of skills and resources required to be prepared for meaningful employment."

Adding excitement to the programme for the learners will be the appearance of Kaizer Chiefs and Orlando Pirates players between 10h00 and 13h00 on Wednesday, 18 April.

The exhibition will be opened with a cocktail function on the evening of Tuesday, 17 April from 18h00.

The daily programme starts at 08h00 on Wednesday 18, Thursday 19 and Friday 20 April, and concludes each day at 15h00.
