CA`s Advantage CA-IDMS database r16 for z/OS optimizes performance, ease of use and flexibility

Johannesburg, 19 Apr 2004

Computer Associates International, Inc. (CA) today announced general availability of Advantage CA-IDMS r16 for z/OS, a powerful, Web-enabled database platform that handles extremely demanding high-volume processing requirements - including online transaction processing, batch job activity, and transactions from diverse distributed-platform applications.

The new release delivers exceptional performance, ease-of-use and flexibility - enabling customers such as BT, which has relied on Advantage IDMS for 20 years, to respond to dynamically changing business requirements while protecting existing technology investments.

One of Europe`s leading providers of telecommunications services, BT is using Advantage CA-IDMS/DB to support its 11.7 terabyte, 12-billion row Customer Service System (CSS) database that processes 10 billion transactions annually. The CSS database, which is Integral to customer relationship management at BT, supports online services such as customer billing, order processing and fault reporting for more than 29 million telephone lines.

"The CSS database ensures accurate and easy access to information, and enables us to process changes to that information at lightning speed," said Stewart Davies, chief executive of BT Exact, the technology research and IT operations arm of BT. "CA`s ongoing investment in Advantage CA-IDMS ensures that we can continue to process massive amounts of customer data and transactions to meet our critical business needs."

Advantage CA-IDMS/DB uses advanced space management, buffering, locking, multitasking, data sharing, operating system exploitation and other sophisticated methods to deliver optimum performance. R16 delivers:

* z/Architecture 64-bit processing that utilizes virtual storage to support massive memory caching, reducing real I/O and improving performance.
* Parallel Access Volume exploitation that allows multiple jobs to simultaneously access the same logical volume and thereby allows much higher I/O rates for increased throughput and reduced response times.
* Full, two-phase commit compatibility between multiple Advantage CA-IDMS/DB systems, DB2, WebSphere MQ and other resource managers, providing fully automatic resynchronization if processing is interrupted during the commit operation.
* Enhanced SQL processing including statement caching for streamlined performance, additional scalar functions for compliance with evolving open standards, and "transaction sharing" to facilitate maintenance of non-SQL applications.
* A comprehensive visual database administration tool to manage Advantage CA-IDMS/DB database, system and security objects from a single, object-oriented GUI.
* Enhanced capabilities for the development and execution of web-enabled and client/server applications through TCP/IP.

"The performance, reliability and interoperability demands on databases continue to escalate," said Tony Gaughan, senior vice president of databases and applications management at CA. "Advantage CA-IDMS r16 uniquely satisfies these demands with its ability to process massive amounts of data seamlessly and facilitate transaction sharing and data integrity between multiple resource managers."

Advantage CA-IDMS r16 is immediately available for z/OS and OS/390 environments with support for VSE/ESA, z/VM and BS2000/OSD scheduled for later this year. A data server option provides ODBC and JDBC access to Advantage CA-IDMS/DB from Windows, z/OS, z/OS.e, OS/390, Linux and UNIX environments.
