CA`s BrightStor ARCserve Backup delivers snap-shot benefits to Microsoft Windows Server 2003 customers

Johannesburg, 09 Nov 2004

Computer Associates International, Inc today announced the BrightStor ARCserve Backup Enterprise Option for Volume Shadow Copy Service (VSS) Hardware Snap-Shot, helping Microsoft Windows Server 2003 customers to cost-effectively implement and manage the nearly instantaneous backup and recovery offered by hardware snap-shot technology.

CA has simplified the use of hardware snap-shot technology via three-way integration between BrightStor ARCserve Backup, the Microsoft Volume Shadow Copy Service, and hardware vendors` native snap-shot functionality.

Working closely with Microsoft and leading disk array vendors, CA has fully integrated and certified the BrightStor ARCserve Backup Enterprise Option for VSS Hardware Snap-Shot with EMC CLARiiON CX-Series, HP EVA 5000 and Hitachi Data Systems Lightning 9900V Storage Systems arrays. This level of integration makes hardware snap-shot technology a transparent component of normal, automated backup operations and helps eliminate the labour-intensive manual tasks that have made it difficult for IT organisations to leverage this technology.

"Customers are telling us that they can no longer cope with the requirements of shrinking their backup periods," said Rahul Auradkar, director, Windows Server Division at Microsoft Corp. "BrightStor ARCserve Backup support for the Microsoft Volume Shadow Copy Service will help businesses of all sizes to take advantage of the inherent manageability of the Windows Server 2003 platform for quick and reliable hardware-based snap-shot recovery."

CA will continue to engineer and validate support for additional hardware vendor solutions with BrightStor ARCserve Backup Enterprise Option for VSS Hardware Snap-Shot.

"With so many strategic technology initiatives vying for their limited resources, IT organisations can`t afford to invest a large amount of money in implementing new storage technologies - even though those technologies can offer real business benefits," said Anders Lofgren, vice-president of BrightStor storage management at CA. "By working closely with Microsoft and leading storage vendors, CA is enabling our customers to cost-effectively reap the performance and availability benefits of the hardware snap-shot."

CA demonstrated the BrightStor ARCserve Backup Enterprise Option for VSS Hardware Snap-Shot solution at the Storage Networking World conference, from 25 to 27 October in Orlando, Florida.
