CA`s Brightstor r11.5 enables customers to manage, protect critical data while supporting business objectives

Optimises storage efficiency, streamlines virtual tape operations
Johannesburg, 09 Sep 2005

Computer Associates (CA) International, Inc (NYSE: CA) today announced the availability of BrightStor r11.5, an integrated set of modular, intelligent storage management solutions that enable organisations to manage and protect information and storage assets while aligning with business objectives.

Built around 13 tightly integrated and enhanced products, BrightStor r11.5 is designed to better align storage spending with business value - a critical objective for organisations as storage volume continues to grow faster than storage budgets. The new version helps customers optimise the efficiency of storage operations and reduce the total cost of ownership through streamlined virtual tape automation and simplified administration of storage assets

"To maximise the value of their storage infrastructure investments, customers need to proactively manage their storage environments in a manner that is closely aligned with how stored data is used by the business," said Anders Lofgren, senior vice-president of BrightStor storage management solutions at CA.

"CA`s BrightStor r11.5 provides businesses with actionable intelligence and robust automation to ensure the continuous availability of information while helping to control IT costs."

Increased operational efficiency - BrightStor ARCserve Backup r11.5 simplifies the setup and management of both disk-to-disk and disk-to-disk-to-tape backup processes, increasing operational efficiency and performance while allowing IT to take advantage of cost-effective disk technologies and achieve service level objectives.

"We need to make sure all of our key business applications are continuously available, so we need to have the best possible backup processes and be able to keep close tabs on available disk space," said Mohamad Alkazaz, IT and telecommunications manager at Saint-Gobain Crystals, a subsidiary of Compagnie de Saint-Gobain, one of the top 100 industrial companies in the world.

"CA`s BrightStor r11.5 performs backups more efficiently and provides us with full visibility into the use of our storage resources."

New caching technology in BrightStor Storage Resource Manager now includes an agent for Sybase, speeds data analysis and improves performance by distributing data collection workloads, further optimising the efficiency of IT operations.

BrightStor r11.5 mainframe products can now take advantage of a single graphical management interface. In addition, BrightStor z/OS tape management, storage resource management, backup and allocation products are now integrated with Unicenter ServicePlus Service Desk for single-point problem resolution. Enhancements to BrightStor CA-Vtape disk buffer management reduce resource consumption and enhance performance.

Support for key business processes - BrightStor Storage Command Center, a new component of BrightStor r11.5, will be available later this fall and provides intuitive, business-centric insight into the enterprise storage environment, transforming raw technical information into an intuitive "dashboard" that lets IT management quickly assess performance and understand how storage assets are supporting key business processes.

Embedded identity and access management capabilities enable IT managers to enforce company-wide security policies.

Extended platform, device and application support - BrightStor r11.5 adds support for 64-bit platforms and mid-range disk arrays from Sun, EMC and HP. It also provides enhanced protection of Lotus Notes and SAP on Linux, and special features for Microsoft SharePoint.

Pricing and availability - BrightStor r11.5 solutions are available under CA`s FlexSelect licensing programme and BrightStor Managed Capacity Pricing, a simplified licensing model based on terabyte capacity that eliminates the need to track server- or application-based licences. Capacity licensing minimums have been lowered from 10 terabytes to 2, enabling small, medium and large enterprises to streamline procurement, control software costs, and easily adapt to changing requirements.
