CA`s latest release of BrightStor CA-Vtape doubles amount of data stored on virtual volumes

Johannesburg, 22 Aug 2001

New architecture enables customers to get more mileage out of existing legacy storage resources

Computer Associates (CA) has announced the latest release of its popular BrightStor CA-Vtape Virtual Tape System (VTS).

Release 2.0 of BrightStor CA-Vtape VTS features major architectural improvements that can double the amount of data stored on virtual volumes. This greatly reduces the system resources required to support the accelerating volume of e-business operations.

With this new release, organisations can compress data stored on virtual volumes within the DASD cache, potentially doubling the amount of data stored on the cache. This allows data centre managers to add additional applications to the DASD cache and keep data in the cache longer for enhanced performance.

BrightStor CA-Vtape VTS is a software solution that lets organisations use existing tape and mainframe hardware, as well as existing applications, to implement a virtual tape system, without requiring changes to the JCL. It addresses the chronic problem of individual tape under-utilisation by stacking multiple files onto each tape volume.

BrightStor CA-Vtape VTS 2.0 offers data centre managers greater flexibility in installation and maintenance by providing parameter-driven customisation that makes it easy to modify installation options. The new release also provides storage administrators with greater flexibility in grouping related data sets and enables more efficient use of tapes.

"As IT organisations seek to do more with less, increasing the efficiency of legacy systems is particularly important," said Phil Treide, vice president of marketing, storage solutions, CA. "BrightStor CA-Vtape VTS helps customers achieve this efficiency by dramatically increasing the amount of data readily available for e-business initiatives at any given time, using existing storage resources."
