Computer Associates International, Inc today announced that Network Computing magazine has chosen CA`s Unicenter AutoSys Job Management as "Editor`s Choice" in a comparative review of six leading job management solutions.
Unicenter AutoSys Job Management r4.5 was selected over solutions from BMC Software, Tidal Software, Cybermation, Argent Software and Vexus Consulting. According to Network Computing, HP said it didn`t have a product fitting its criteria, and IBM declined to submit its Tivoli software.
"CA entered the job scheduling field almost three decades ago, so it`s no surprise that this version of Unicenter AutoSys Job Management reflects years of enhancements and experience," wrote Mike DeMaria, technology editor, in the magazine`s 1 April issue.
"The package has an easy-to-use graphical interface for Unix and Windows admins, as well as a Web client for operators and technicians."
Network Computing evaluated products for management, job control, reporting capabilities and price, and focused on tasks such as prerequisite checks, job creation and error recovery. Scheduled jobs consisted of batch files and command-line executables, and the magazine added a sleep command to some of the batch files to make some jobs run late. To determine how a product handled failure conditions, editors made batch files terminate with non-zero exit codes.
Products were tested using a dual 2.4GHz Pentium Xeon system with 1GB of RAM, running Windows 2000 Server SP4 as a job scheduling server. A second machine ran as a backup. A 600MHz Pentium III system with 356MB of RAM running Windows 2000 Server SP4 operated as client.
According to Network Computing, the job schedulers tested are a bridge between mainframe and Unix environments. Vendors that have mainframe backgrounds or support mainframes in their job-scheduling suite fared better than the rest.
"We`re gratified that the competitive superiority of our Unicenter AutoSys solution has been independently verified in such a thorough and technically astute review," said Will Bauman, senior vice-president of Unicenter job management at CA.
"Network Computing`s Editor`s Choice award again demonstrates that CA is committed to providing customers with outstanding technology management solutions that are innovative, functionally robust and easy-to-use."
Unicenter AutoSys Job Management delivers event-driven scheduling, centralised real-time monitoring and programmable error recovery to help ensure dependability and scalability. Integration with Unicenter job scheduling engines on the mainframe allows customers to deploy job scheduling across multiple environments and create cross-platform job management policies. Release 4.5 delivers asset-level security and role-based administration, centralised real-time monitoring, an enhanced Web interface, and Web-based job flow simulation.
