Johannesburg, 25 Aug 1999

Casey Electronics, part of the Casey group - a JSE-listed black empowerment total solutions house - has won a tender with the Pretoria City Council worth more than R3m for the supply of more than 300 Casey-branded Pentium PCs. This is the first Pretoria City Council tender won by the Centurion-based IT group.

The PCs, which are aimed at three categorises - power users, normal and graphics users - are being deployed at all city council departments, including depots. Rudi Mare, senior engineering technologist at the council, said Casey met the important criteria laid out in the tender. "We were looking for the best price performance, as well as other aspects such as the fact that the motherboards must be compliant with MicrosoftWindows 95, Windows 98, Windows NT - and with the Novell operating system."

Mare said the council has a significant investment in the Novell operating system. The council currently runs an estimated 80 local area networks (LANs) - serving more than 2 500 PCs - all of which are coupled via the different LANs to a central wide area residing at Sammy Marks Square in the city centre. Most of these LANs are running on Novell.

Casey has also developed a direct online ordering system that will enable the council to order stock over the from tender winners. The system, however, is still to be deployed.

According to Mahomed Cassim, CEO of the Casey group, the company won the tender from a total of 11 competitors. "We are very happy to have won this tender. It is extremely strategic for us.Although we have nationwide branches our head office is in Centurion and we believe we are well-placed to properly the government sector, including the Pretoria City Council."

Casey also recently won a R250 000 software contract with the Springs City Council as well as a joint Y2K contract at the Department of Water Affairs with strategic partner, Dimension Data. "We are forcefully targeting government and parastatals," said Cassim. "We see it becoming a major revenue stream for us in the next 24 months."

The Casey group boasts a number of divisions focusing on specialist areas that include the Internet, networking, maintenance, networking and consulting.
