The need for rapidly upgradeable storage space and bandwidth, driven by the unpredictable growth and demands of the e-commerce domain, has led HP to modify its positioning in the high-end storage and server markets. CCH Enterprise Solutions, South Africa`s leading HP reseller in the high-end of the market, has announced a tight alignment with this new positioning.
Abie du Plessis, HP product manager at CCH Enterprise Solutions, says HP has launched two new programmes, with the spotlight on high-end storage through the recently announced HP XP series.
The first programme relates to consolidating high-end storage systems into servers and data centres, cross-platform (Solaris, S/390 and others). This is in line with HP`s instant capacity on demand (iCOD) solution, which offers a predetermined amount of storage that companies can grow into. Du Plessis says: "It is a pay-per-use model: a company may buy a Terabyte of capacity, but only use a small portion of the total space at the onset. Extra capacity is only paid for as it is turned on, so the organisation would initially only pay for, say, 200 Gigabytes."
He adds: "This programme is targeted at the e-commerce space, where capacity and growth are unpredictable. HP`s `Always-on` infrastructure is one component of this new strategy, allowing for upgrading without disruption of the computing environment."
HP says its Always-on infrastructure adjusts to changes in business, allowing companies to increase or decrease bandwidth effortlessly, on demand - so they always have access to the resources and technologies they need. Based on HP`s data centre, e-services, and utility computing strengths, Always-on infrastructure is a computing foundation that supports 24x7 operations.
The second programme is concentrated on the new N and V series and high-end Superdome products. Part of this focus involves CCH Enterprise Solutions` being certified as a Superdome partner. This programme also has a data centre spotlight, offers an iCOD solution, and is targeted at ISPs and ASPs. The principle behind it relates to a maximum number of processors being turned on incrementally as and when required. Du Plessis says the strategy has been unveiled and a number of XPs have been sold. "There are also some good prospects on the Superdome," he adds.
"In addition, HP`s Always-on infrastructure provides 99,995% uptime - essential on the Web. It provides e-commerce providers with cost-effective, high-availability infrastructure and high scalability. This new positioning gives HP market leadership."
CCH Enterprise Solutions is partnering with HP on new announcements. There will be frequent product enhancements next year in both Risc and Intel-based server and storage platforms, says Du Plessis. He concludes: "CCH Enterprise Solutions has the highest concentration of HP expertise and experience in the market, with over 140 years` knowledge in the group."
