JSE-listed CCH has been named an alliance partner in Nokia`s Wireless Application Protocol (WAP) programme, the only South African software developer to earn this honour.
WAP is expected to be one of the most important and fastest growing technologies in use today. It provides universal open standard for bringing Internet content and advanced value-added services (VAS) to mobile phones and other wireless devices.
"WAP represents another important building block in the emerging e-commerce world," says CCH Software Futures director Andrew Procter. "It permits the deployment of a wide range of applications and information to mobile devices. CCH`s expertise in this area has been recognised by Nokia: through CCH Software Futures we have stayed at the forefront of WAP technology, and we have developed the first pilot WAP gateway in South Africa. This has been written in Java, is fully operational and being demonstrated to a range of interested customers. We will soon be announcing our first successes in this market."
CCH Software Futures will leverage off its involvement in the Sun-Netscape Alliance, which provides solutions for e-business, and will provide applications and application hosting.
"WAP can be used to display any type of information and provide e-commerce applications through mobile phones," adds Procter. "This can include general sports updates, banking, share trading - and it embraces the full mechanism for initiating and completing the transaction, typically through a gateway. We have developed every component of this service offering and its infrastructure."
Nokia has among the industry`s most complete offerings for the WAP market, including WAP gateways, mobile terminals, browsers, and tools for WAP-based content creation and delivery.
