While continuous data protection (CDP) seems to be a hot topic for larger organisations with multiple sites, it does not currently have the same focus for SMEs, according to Chris Larkins, Axiz product specialist, HP Enterprise.
"There is a focus on data protection from most companies; however, the extent of this focus differs based on the size and complexity of the company. CDP is touted as the next generation of backup restore technology as it immediately responds to unauthorised or unintended changes to data. This is in contrast to data-protection technologies that only protect the physical storage from loss of data," explains Larkins.
He says that while data-protection technologies are obviously as important and equally overlooked, SMEs need to realise that CDP performs a very different function and needs to be viewed as a must have: "CDP as well as a data protection strategy need to be on a SMEs storage agenda and soon."
When reviewing what is encompassed in a data protection strategy, Larkins says companies must view it as one that includes backup and recovery, disaster recovery and business continuity, security and data preservation or archiving: "Aside from obvious business requirements and safe guarding your data, there is also the compliance aspect to consider."
Larkins believes the real value of CDP technology is not that it is continuous; rather he says the advantage is that it is super-efficient. Because it removes the hassle of manual backup, he says more companies - especially SMEs - should consider adopting the technology.
"CDP will noticeably improve recovery, compared to traditional, incremental backups," he says. "For that reason, demand should grow, and CDP may well find its way into more SMEs," concludes Larkins.
