First National Bank (FNB) Cellphone Banking customers are now able to buy Cell C SMS and data bundles via the bank's USSD channel.

Until now, the only Cell C product that was offered via cellphone banking was prepaid airtime. Cell C says FNB is the first, and currently the only, bank to enter into a partnership with the operator to enable its customers to purchase bundles.

Shadrack Palmer, chief commercial officer of FNB Cellphone Banking, says the partnership with SA's third cellphone operator is an opportunity for the big four bank to increase its product and service offering and to attract new customers.

“SA still remains one of the fastest growing mobile communications markets in the world, with just over 12 million active data users, and the number is set to increase,” says Cell C.

According to the Mobile Consumer in SA 2012 report, released by World Wide Worx last month, data spend in SA has grown by 50% since 2010. The report further indicates that 11% of data consumers purchase prepaid data bundles, with 15% of them being on contract.

Karin Fourie, Cell C's executive head of communications, says the operator's aim is to leverage the current growth in the data market and form partnerships with relevant industry players. “Our data and SMS bundles are the most competitive in the market and we are confident that our customers as well as FNB customers will benefit greatly.”

FNB customers can purchase Cell C SMS and data bundles using FNB Cellphone Banking, as well as via the FNB mobile application. Customers can also make payment using FNB's reward programme units, eBucks.

Cell C says the offering will also be rolled out to the FNB Facebook app under the “Top Me Up” functionality at a later stage. The daily limit for airtime and data bundle purchases through the Facebook App is currently R60.
