The mobile price war continues, with Cell C's latest weekend promotion that sees "99 Cents For Real" customers getting back 100% of their weekly recharge value in airtime to use over weekends.

According to the cellphone operator, for every rand that a customer recharges with from Monday to Sunday, Cell C will match the recharge value, giving back the monetary value for use over weekends. The promotion will run from 15 October until 13 January next year.

"All recharges performed in the week accumulate towards your total bonus airtime to be used over the weekend. The airtime can be used to make Cell C to Cell C calls, send SMSes and MMSes, or for Internet usage. Premium-rated services and all bundle recharges, such as All in One vouchers, will not qualify for the free bonus airtime."

Cell C CEO Alan Knott-Craig says the promotion is a bid to continue bringing South African cellphone users simpler and more affordable mobile rates. "Customers will know exactly how much they will get over the weekend, because it's exactly the amount they recharged with during the week."

All customers on the 99 Cents For Real tariff plan will automatically be eligible for Cell C's "Weekend Special" promotion - opt-in is not required. "Customers on other prepaid tariff plans can migrate to the 99 Cents For Real plan by dialling *147*1*1# from their prepaid Cell C phone. Once they have migrated, they will automatically get the Free Weekend Special on their first recharge."

Cell C says there is no minimum recharge value required to qualify for bonus airtime, nor is there a maximum limit to the bonus airtime you can get.

"When making calls or messaging over the weekends, the bonus airtime will be used first, before their normal airtime is used. Bonus airtime accumulated during the week that is not used over the weekend will expire permanently at midnight on that Sunday."

Knott-Craig says the advantage of rewarding with rand value, instead of offering free minutes, is that customers can choose how they spend their money, "be it for voice, or messaging."
