bandwidth in the 2 100MHz band has been approved. This puts the service provider on par with MTN and Vodacom.
Cell C has been assigned an additional 5MHz to its existing 2x10MHz 3G spectrum.
“We can confirm that ICASA [Independent Communications Authority of SA] has approved our application for bandwidth to meet additional capacity demands,” says Cell C head of regulatory affairs, Mothibi Ramusi.
According to Ramusi, the application was approved by ICASA in January.
“Cell C will use the bandwidth for its HSPA+ services, particularly for capacity and in-fill,” explains Ramusi, adding that it is part of the service provider's current network rollout plans.
Competition has been heating up in the telecoms industry this year, most notably with the launch of Telkom's mobile arm, 8ta, and the unveiling of Cell C's HSPA+ network and subsequent aggressive data pricing strategy.
Cell C has spent approximately R5 billion on its new network and says it will continue to invest in further expansion across the country in 2011.
