Many users say Cell C's network has been down for more than 12 hours.

A transmission failure on 34 Cell C sites in the Western Cape has resulted in widespread downtime for subscribers, with many users unable to connect for more than 12 hours.

In a statement released today, the operator says it is "in the process of repairing the issue with our network partners in the area. Services should be fully restored soon.

"Cell C will communicate with customers as soon as the problem has been resolved. We apologise for the inconvenience."

As complaints and queries streamed in this morning, Cell C explained the situation to its Facebook following, which stands at over 193 000 users. "To the Cape Town Cell C family, we are aware that our network has been affected in the Western Cape and our technicians are working on resolving the issue as quickly as possible! We apologise for the inconvenience caused to all our customers."

'Poor service'

One user lambasted the operator for being "quick to bill you and take your cash, but when their entire network is down and I lose out on jobs, they even quicker to put you through to the next department to pass the buck" (sic).

Another user added that Cell C was "the best [and] now since last night I haven't been able to use my phone and yet I have lots of airtime and data".

Update

Cell C has since issued a follow-up statement noting 20 of the 34 sites affected by the transmission problems have been restored. "Signal to the affected areas will still be intermittent while the base stations stabilise. Full signal should be restored soon," the operator said. Technicians are still working on resolving the problems at remaining sites.

@faithy_waithi added to the growing chorus of irate users. "No network in Cape Town for the last 12 hours @CellC. Thank you so very much for inconveniencing me."

@wba1310 weighed in on the "Poor poor service in Cape Town, 3G always down and searching for signal".
