Cell C CEO Talaat Laham is relinquishing his post to take up the non-executive chairmanship of the cellular network operator.
The company announced late this morning that Jeffrey Hedberg, the former CEO and chairman of Deutsche Telekom USA and board member of Deutsche Telekom, has been appointed to take up the CEO position.
According to a company statement, the move to separate the chairmanship and the CEO role was undertaken in line with corporate governance best practice.
It adds that Laham will focus on strategic issues.
"I believe that as Cell C`s non-executive chairman I will be able to guide and advise the company as it moves into its next phase of development," Laham says. "It will also give me more time to be with my family again."
Laham has led Cell C for six years.
Last month the company, the smallest of SA`s three cellular operators, reported R442 million earnings before interest, tax, depreciation and amortisation (EBITDA) for the 2005 financial year.
This was a significant step for Cell C, which in 2004 incurred an EBITDA loss of R47 million and in 2003 a loss of R1.09 billion.
Hedberg, in his role at Deutsche Telekom USA, also oversaw US subsidiaries T-Mobile and T-Systems.
Before being appointed CEO of Deutsche Telekom USA, Hedberg was executive vice-president at the parent, Deutsche Telekom, responsible for developing the strategy for the international division.
He has also been executive vice-president and management board member of Swisscom International in Switzerland.
