Cellpage targets broader market

Cellpage is opening up its cellular pager to the wider market after it was previously offered only to doctors, says Cellpage client liaison manager, Marc Reed.

Reed says the feedback received from CellDoc, a paging service launched two years ago solely for doctors, has been positive and Cellpage has now launched the product targeting other markets, including IT professionals.

"We believe the service will be of particular use to IT professionals who want to be contacted, but don`t want to be bothered too often by calls to their cellphones," he says.

Reed says the service is free to subscribers and acts as another voicemail box. If someone wants to contact the subscriber, they call the Cellpage number and listen to the interactive voice response, punching in the subscriber`s five-digit mailbox number when asked to do so.

The subscriber`s recorded message is then heard and the person leaves a message. An SMS is sent to the subscriber informing them what number called the voicemail box, says Reed.

"The subscriber then makes a toll-free call from their cellphone and retrieves the message. If the subscriber calls from a phone other than their cellphone, they simply type in a PIN code and retrieve the message. This way, the subscriber does not have to give out their personal cellphone number," he says.

To sign up for the service, users can go to www.cellpage.co.za and register for a mailbox number. Reed says Cellpage is able to provide the service free of charge because it has negotiated with MTN and Vodacom to split the revenue made from people leaving messages in the voicemail boxes. The service is not yet available to Cell C subscribers.
