Cellphone service that offers a peace of mind to consumers

Johannesburg, 18 Nov 2008

There is no question that everyone needs to know that their family and friends are safe because nowadays safety has become a basic need. In an effort to satisfy this need, the telecommunications group MTN has launched MTN WhereRU and MTN 2MyAid services to help consumers locate their loved ones and enable them to call for help in an emergency situation.

“As MTN, we understand that crime continues to be a contentious issue in South Africa and for this reason personal safety is an important aspect in the life of every SA citizen. The MTN WhereRU and 2MyAid services are able to offer consumers an easy and affordable way to locate loved ones or ask for help in an emergency,” says Donovan Smith, General Manager: Consumer Segment at MTN SA.

MTN WhereRU is designed specifically for families and business owners who need to know where their loved ones or employees are at all times. Using a cellphone, a user can locate up to ten consenting people using SMS and the Internet.

When a consumer requests the location of a consenting person, they will receive an SMS with an accurate written description of their location depending on where the individual is. MTN WhereRU is available 24 hours a day and can be used with any type of cellphone.

MTN 2MyAid is suited to everyone who is concerned about the security of their family. This service converts a cellphone into a panic button, sending a distress SMS to four pre-determined emergency contacts. The SMS will explain that assistance is required and it contains the details of the user's location.

“By using technology available from MTN, these two services will give consumers the peace of mind they need,” concludes Smith.

To register for MTN WhereRU and MTN 2MyAid, MTN PayAsYouGo and Contract customers can SMS the word 'Register' and 'Help' respectively to 31911 then follow the instructions to complete the registration process. Each service costs R12.49 per month. For more information, please go to http://www.mtn.co.za
