Chaparral Network Storage Inc., a leading provider of intelligent storage networking solutions, and VERITAS Software Corporation, The Data Availability Company, today announced that Chaparral`s FS1310 Intelligent Storage Router supports the first phase and initial product release of the VERITAS VERTEX Initiative - a comprehensive set of data protection solutions that utilizes breakthrough snapshot backup technology to virtually eliminate backup windows.
VERITAS Software is unveiling the VERTEX Initiative at VERITAS VISION2000, its fourth annual user`s conference, where customers, analysts and press can view a demonstration of Chaparral`s fibre channel-to-SCSI routing device that supports the SCSI Extended Copy command. Also referred to as XCOPY, the SCSI Extended Copy command is a block-oriented command that permits backup data to move from disk directly to tape in a SAN environment allowing for server-free backup - a feature available in VERITAS NetBackup 4.0V ServerFree Agent.
"For years backup applications have been on a steady evolution of functionality. With server-free backup, the revolution begins," said Michael Hardy, vice president of Marketing at Chaparral Network Storage. "Server-free backup will change the way enterprises of all sizes protect their storage, allowing the highest possible levels of data availability. Chaparral is pleased to be working with VERITAS Software to make this revolution happen for our joint customers."
Chaparral`s Intelligent Storage Routers enable companies to connect SCSI and legacy storage devices to fibre channel storage networks, which provide customers with the advantages of fibre channel while protecting their existing investments. The FS1310 provides fibre channel-to-SCSI connectivity for storage devices in the midrange storage system market. The Chaparral FS1310 Intelligent Storage Router includes an optional extended copy feature, which supports high-speed serverless backup in the SAN. With this added feature, the FS1310 router has the ability to provide faster backup operations, saving data directly from disk to tape without continuous involvement from the server.
In the initial VERITAS VERTEX Initiative release, the VERITAS NetBackup 4.0V ServerFree Agent supports the frozen image or snapshot methods for VERITAS NetBackup FlashBackup, VERITAS Volume Manager 3.1 snapshots, and VERITAS File System 3.4 snapshots (known as Storage Checkpoint). Enterprise clients with applications that cannot tolerate downtime for backup processes will benefit from the ServerFree Agent, as it will further eliminate the backup footprint on any application or database server and improve performance at the same time.
"Through its support of the new snapshot and data movement technologies contained within the VERITAS VERTEX Initiative, Chaparral is helping enterprise organizations progress to a new model for data protection," said Neal Ater, senior vice president, Data Protection Group, VERITAS Software. "We are pleased to be working with Chaparral to provide collaborative storage solutions that meet today`s market needs."
The VERITAS VERTEX Initiative is a series of VERITAS NetBackup products flexible enough to support existing hardware and software backup implementations in heterogeneous environments while incorporating innovative VERITAS Software technologies such as VERITAS File System and VERITAS Volume Manager. This innovative approach to data protection will allow organizations to protect critical business information with no loss of performance or availability, even as enterprise data grows at an unprecedented rate. The VERITAS VERTEX Initiative will change the conventional way of thinking about data protection and offer end users new alternatives for today`s performance needs.
