Chinese operator to end illegal SMS content
China Unicom, China`s second largest mobile service operator, is implementing new measures to eliminate SMS content that has been declared illegal on its network, reports ChinaTechNews.
The company has developed an information safety responsibility agreement with service providers and set a special phone number for consumers to report illegal short messages when they receive them.
The new initiatives include stricter access to service providers and better content management based on the requirements from the country`s Ministry of Information Industry.
SMS continues to thrive
SMS remains a popular application and a real money-maker for mobile providers in the US, reports TechNewsWorld.
"Because it is such a simple service, it can be easy to ignore SMS but it has been a cash-cow for carriers," said Bob Egan, research director at The Tower Group.
IM popularity surges
According to the Second Annual Instant Messaging Trends Study released by American Online last week, IM use in the US has increased by 19%, reports PC World. This includes use of IM for both work and play.
"Before, I think there was the thought that it was only college or high school students that used this, but now it`s really something that is used by anyone of all ages," says Chamath Palihapitiya, VP and GM for AOL Instant Messenger and ICQ.
In addition to helping one communicate at a social level, IM can also help one work more efficiently, Palihapitiya says
IM for SMEs
IM is maturing into a viable communications tool for small businesses, reports Entrepreneur.com in an MSNBC report. The article says IM saves time and effort and can help improve customer service.
It also quotes the Second Annual Instant Messaging Trends Study, which states that over 27% of IM users now communicate via instant messaging at work - a 71% increase over 2003.
IM is catching on because it offers many benefits for small businesses. But there are drawbacks - and some outright risks - to consider as well. Used properly, IM can be an extremely useful addition to a company`s communications tools, the article says.
