The use of third-party smartphone and tablet accessories can have far-reaching consequences, not only for the consumer, but also for manufacturers.

According to Craige Fleischer, director of mobile communications at Samsung SA, customers need to know how to make optimal use of products, which will ensure the performance and longevity of their devices. "Many consumers are buying and utilising accessories such as chargers and batteries, which are not approved for their specific devices, without realising the true costs involved," says Fleischer.

There are several disadvantages of using non-authentic accessories, which include reduced lifespan of the device and damage to the battery, as well as device malfunction; in some cases, product failure could cause harm to the user, he adds.

Fleischer points out that using accessories that have not been endorsed by the device manufacturer could impact, or void, the warranty. Typically, manufacturers do not test universal accessories for compatibility with branded devices, making them unable to guarantee performance or to protect the consumer against damages that could occur.

His warnings come amid news that a Chinese woman was killed when she answered a call on her iPhone 5, while it was charging. It was found that the woman was using a fake charger, and Apple has since launched an initiative that aims to replace counterfeit USB power adaptors, offering original Apple adaptors at a "special price".

While it might not seem that batteries and chargers are important accessories, Fleischer encourages all consumers to use original products and chargers to ensure they receive the performance and reliability they desire.
