The memory market in SA is growing at a rate of knots. Driving this growth is increased demand from the IT sector with users looking for more speed and performance. But users are at risk of compromising performance, the very thing they desire, by selecting memory based on price and not quality. According to Bruce Murphy, memory product manager at leading IT infrastructure distributor Axiz, consumers need to make decisions on memory based on more than just price.
Murphy says the volatile memory market has led to an influx of lower grade memory chips, resulting in broader product ranges and as a result, lower prices. "These broader ranges confuse the consumer more than anything else. This results in a decision based on price as this is an area the consumer understands."
But what are consumers sacrificing when purchasing a lower priced memory module? Murphy warns that there are several pitfalls when selecting a cheaper range. The major cost and quality component in a memory module is the chip. Despite the promises made by manufacturers, consumers need to be aware of the pitfalls of selecting a no-name brand versus a quality chip manufacturer such as Samsung, Hynix, Micron or Infineon. For example, a lifetime warranty on a no-name brand is not necessarily that, nor is it an indication of quality. The possibility of a latent defect is also much higher when purchasing a lower grade product.
"The product performance is just not what it should be," says Murphy.
"Few people realise how important the memory chip brand is when making the purchasing decision. Like most consumer products, a brand is nothing more and nothing less than the promises of value you or your company make," continues Murphy.
It is for this reason that consumers need to make an informed decision with regards to the memory chip brand. This is particularly relevant as the market moves towards higher bus speeds and faster through put speeds. "The integrity of the components on the module and assembly are vital to achieving the desired experience and users will be left doubting their purchase if they do not consider other issues besides price," says Murphy.
