CipherWave has launched its fastest storage appliance to date, the “CipherSAN-S Series”. It uses SLC-based Solid State Drives (SSDs) and tested in working environments at transfer speeds of 1.3GB per second and IO Meter readings at 180 000 IOPS in a single storage appliance.
The CipherSAN-S sets a new performance standard for high performance storage servers that require fast random read and write access or in high load transaction environments.
The key performance is 32% energy saving due to the use of SSD drives and the new Intel XEON 7500 series processors, that operate on 45nm technology and drives that produce virtually no heat as compared to normal SATA or SAS drives.
Considering that a SAS hard drive can deliver 1 700 IOPS and a SATA hard drive 1 500 IOPS, the overwhelming performance leap with the new CipherSAN represent over 100 times the average performance of a standard storage appliance sold today. This represents a quantum leap from traditional spindle drives.
Running a complex SQL query on a database with over a million records would take two to three minutes. With the CipherSAN-S the test results returned the queries in less than one second!
For organisations that have exchange or heavy loads on their exchange servers, this appliance will be able to provide zero latency and instant exchange access around the clock, and users can save as they do not have to pay additional fees for licensing additional processors.
SSDs are today a proven technology and deliver proven performance results in many applications from virtual, SQL or web servers to transaction systems, Web interfaces and customer facing portals in just naming a few of the common application requiring high throughput and storage demand that can be satisfied by the CipherSAN-S.
SSDs use a fraction of the power of conventional hard drives and run almost completely cool which saves on air conditioning requirements and power, thus promoting a faster return on investment in operating and energy costs. The entry-level CipherSAN-S series with 12TB of storage, and dual Intel 7500 processors will be launched at under R95 000 (or about $13 500 USD).
