CipherWave offers first virtual, cloud environment based on solid state drives

With more organisations and businesses moving into the private and public cloud, the demand for speed and performance is escalated exponentially - CipherWave announced the first ever solution in South Africa with SSDs.

Midrand, 11 Mar 2011

CipherVault - CipherWave's category 5 data centre has launched a new offering to the South African market. From April 2011, customers will have the option to host and store their virtual applications and private clouds on solid state drives (SSDs).

With SSDs as the storage platform of choice, all users will experience near-zero latency, more than 180 times greater performance and unparalleled speed enhancement from their virtual servers.

SSDs use only a fraction of the power of spindle-based hard drives and produce almost zero heat, thus enabling much cooler operations inside CipherVault data centre and extreme performance enhancement where required.

It is known that hard drives use anywhere from 60% to 72% of total power consumption in high density storage applications, such as 24-bay arrays or greater. Using SSDs can reduced power consumption by over 90%, and with lower power to this magnitude, almost zero heat emission from the storage arrays with the use of SSD drives.

This has a ripple effect in our data centre, whereby the redundant cooling systems work on much lower loading, and this further enhances power savings and is part of our strategy to being the greenest data centre in the country. CipherWave has stated the offering will be attractive and priced on a per customer basis.

With ongoing and significant investments in new technologies, CipherWave's cloud and virtual offering will be a first such offering in South Africa, and customers can now choose their storage platform.

Customers will be able to choose between conventional virtual and cloud hosting on SAS-based Enterprise SANs, or the new SSD platform SAN architecture. The SSD platform will be ideal for intensive applications such as transactional servers, heavy processing applications, demanding Web servers and exchange or e-mail applications that have demanding users. The list of advantages is endless and customers can have a major marketing, performance and business edge over their competitors by choosing a platform where speed count and where competitive performance is essential.
