Cisco buy to boost self-services
Privately held newScale's software creates a service catalogue and self-service portal for IT organisations to use in buying cloud computing services.
As telephone companies look to compete with Internet-based service providers such as Amazon, they will need to offer comparable tools that deliver their services on an as-needed basis.
According to newScale, its service - which it describes as a storefront or portal for both desktop and data centre services - has two million users, notes Virtualization Review.
“Cloud computing represents a major shift in the evolution of the Internet, and as more customers migrate from traditional IT infrastructures, the need for rapid self-provisioning and efficient management becomes increasingly critical,” says Parvesh Sethi, senior VP of Cisco Services.
“With the acquisition of newScale, Cisco will be able to accelerate the deployment of cloud services through a service catalogue and self-service portal that allows customers to easily manage their IT infrastructures,” Sethi says.
For Cisco, which offers servers for the cloud and is part of a partnership to provide modular building blocks for private clouds in conjunction with VMware and EMC, this buy falls in line with its focus on enterprise customers building out private clouds, states Gigaom.
However, it's unclear what this buy means for rPath and Eucalyptus, which have joined up with newScale to create a software stack for private clouds called the NRE.
