Cisco has launched its Unified Virtual Private Network (VPN) Suite, a set of layer 2 and 3 VPN technologies that will integrate across the networking company`s core and access network platforms.
The suite supports both IP and MPLS backbones, enabling new protocols, including Any Transport over MPLS (AToM), which allows for layer 2 services to operate over a MPLS network; and Layer 2 Tunnelling Protocol version 3 (L2TPv3) which similarly transports L2 access over IP backbones. L2TPv3 supports frame relay, ATM, HDLC, PPP and Ethernet protocols over an IP network.
Integration between IPSec and MPLS has been enhanced, and traditional Q0S, Netflow and SLA technologies will continue to be supported.
"Service providers want to take advantage of their IP or MPLS backbones while expanding their Layer 2 access revenues," says Mark Baptiste, director, service provider at Cisco Systems sub-Saharan Africa.
"Cisco`s Unified VPN Suite enables them to expand their reach, introduce new IP service offerings, and cost effectively transport existing access traffic over their packet backbones."
