Citrix Systems, the global leader in access infrastructure solutions, has released findings from research into mobile work routines that reveal cellphones, laptops and personal digital assistants (PDAs) along with requisite power chargers and cords are a growing burden for mobile workers to haul on business trips away from the office.
The findings show a trend of bags and pockets weighed down by a web of cords, computers and entertainment electronics. Citrix offers ways for mobile workers to slim down with device-independent, secure access to business-critical applications anytime, anywhere.
According to the research survey of more than 700 respondents, two out of five mobile employees carry multiple devices with them on trips away from the office. Almost three-quarters of workers on-the-go carry cellphones, making it the most popular mobile device. More than a third of workers carry between two and four devices, while the top 6% of the mobile worker population lugged five, six or even seven devices. Overall, almost a quarter of all mobile workers carry three or more devices with them at a time.
To help alleviate this growing issue, Citrix provides flexible access infrastructure that makes it easier to connect people to applications and information from any location, with any device, over any network, with the best possible access experience. Through technologies such as application virtualisation, companies can reduce the number of devices mobile workers have to carry by giving employees access to applications and information back in the data centre through any network connection.
"Companies are investing heavily to help their employees be productive while they`re on the road, but these findings show mobility sometimes makes travelling more complicated - especially with today`s emphasis on airport security. In addition to hindering mobile workers at security checkpoints with the bulk of cords and power bricks, traditional desktop applications these workers need may be trapped on laptops or in the corporate data centre, and not as easily accessible as travellers require," said Nick Keene, Country Manager, Citrix South Africa.

The survey of more than 700 nationally representative Americans who travel for work was conducted by Kelton Research between 20 June 2006 and 3 July 2006 using an e-mail invitation and an online survey. Quotas were set to ensure reliable and accurate representation of the total US population, 18 years of age and older. The survey has a 95% confidence rate with a margin of error of 3.7%. Electronic devices included in this research were laptops, cellphones, PDAs, music players and headsets and personal DVD players.
