Companies no longer have to buy software, they subscribe to software, says Graham Strydom, senior manager at Marutech, about IT service management (ITSM) in the cloud.

Strydom, along with Bruce Cloete, CTO of Marutech, spoke at this week's ITWeb Virtualisation and Cloud Computing conference, in Bryanston.

Cloud computing, Strydom said, enables ITSM on demand. “ITSM is not about technology. It's about providing a better service to your client.”

The benefits of such a model for business, they explained, are alignment and functionality, usability, good pricing, a new delivery model and no more difficult upgrades.

On the IT side, the benefits are Web 2.0 simplicity, increase in productivity, fast time-to-value, upgrades and continuous innovation.

“With cloud computing, you can spend significantly less money in utilising cloud services.” said Cloete. “You can also be more efficient because you can actually focus on what you know best. Leave the tech stuff up to the techies, and you do what you need to do.”

Cloete added that the cloud takes away the complexity of managing one's own infrastructure and software. ”Cloud is getting major adoption, very quickly.”
