Only 9% of IT professionals in SA say they are very knowledgeable and deal with cloud computing as part of their jobs, according to survey conducted by ITWeb and Fujitsu.

Of the 246 valid respondents, 71% say the have a vague, little or no idea at all about what cloud computing is, whereas the remaining 20% say the have a good working knowledge of it.

These statistics were presented at the ITWeb Cloud Computing and Virtualisation conference held in Bryanston this week.

ITWeb editorial director, Ranka Jovanovic, said the survey was conducted because there is so much uncertainty as to whether cloud computing is just a concept or a real solution that enables companies to increase the efficiency of their IT services while managing costs.

Jovanovic further said the survey serves as an insight into what IT professionals think of certain topics. “The good thing about this survey is that we did it two weeks ago; so this is very current information.

“The fact that it is a quick online survey and that we did it on ITWeb's platform where we actually meet IT professionals gives us the immediacy to present to you now what people think about cloud computing,” said Jovanovic.

While 50% of IT professionals say cloud computing is here to stay, 45% say it has potential but needs to be proven and 5% say it's hype generated by the IT industry.

Compared to last year's 38% of people saying SA is ready for cloud computing, the numbers have risen this year to 46%, whereas the remaining 54% say SA is still not ready.

However, there are positive results showing that companies are slowly beginning to understand the idea of cloud computing. Last year, only 9% had implemented it and in 2010 this stands at 11%.

The survey also shows about 90% of companies believe cloud computing will improve the impact of centres on the environment.
