The Department of Communications has appointed three new deputy directors general.

The three appointees are Keith Shongwe, responsible for coordination, integration and international affairs; Harold Wesso, responsible for policy development; and Harry Mathabathe, who will serve as deputy director general for finance.

Shongwe and Wesso will take up their new positions at the beginning of the department`s financial year on 1 April, says Albi Modise, the department`s acting chief director. Mathabathe`s appointment comes after he was promoted from his previous position as the department`s CFO.

Shongwe replaces Phumelele Ntombela-Ndzimela, who moved to the SABC as director of public and affairs, and Wesso is filling Joe Mjwara`s shoes.

The department says Cabinet`s approval of the appointments comes as a shot in the arm, especially given the centrality of ICT in government`s stated interventions to ensure the accelerated and shared growth initiative of SA thrives.

Shongwe is a senior GM at the State IT Agency, responsible for its centres of excellence.

He holds a BSc in biology and chemistry, and a CDE diploma in , both from the University of Swaziland. He has an MBCHB from the University of Natal, and holds an advancement management programme certificate with Wits Business School.

Wesso leads the ICT programmes of the Western Cape Provincial Government and represents the provincial government on strategy and the ICT committees of the University of Cape Town. He is a member of the e-health commission of the presidential national commission on the information society and development. He holds a BCompt degree and master`s in business administration.

Mathabathe joined the department in 2001 as CFO.
