Filling the gap between the traditional PC and the notebook, Compaq`s iPAQ is branded as an device. In reality it is a portable desktop.

Apart from an innovative marketing position and form factor, the machine offers another rare characteristic - it ships in a "legacy-free" flavour as well as the normal iPAQ version. The legacy-free machine`s external I/O ports, such as PS2, parallel and serial, have all been replaced with five USB ports.

Other key features include a 500MHz PIII or Celeron processor; 64 or 128MB RAM, Windows 2000, and Compaq`s intelligent manageability. The intelligent manageability enables remote cloning, deployment, installation, configuration and backup/restore features will help to keep the road warrior`s iPAQ in good nick.

Compaq MultiBay technology enables hot-swapping of slimline DVD-ROM, CD, or SuperDisk LS-120 drives without a reboot.

The machine is expected to land towards the end of the third quarter or the beginning of the fourth quarter, and will be available from Tarsus Technologies.
