Compaq drives new era in business computing, says Tarsus

Johannesburg, 26 Jul 2001

Guiding the industry into a new era of business computing, Tarsus Technologies, a member of JSE-listed MB Technologies, has announced the availability of the new CompaqEvo N400c and N150 notebooks.

"Presenting sleek designs, the new Compaq Evo notebook range offers a series of advanced features, including innovations such as connectivity for the ultra-light Evo Notebook N400c, and a durable, affordable, lightweight (2.7 kg) design for the Evo Notebook N150," says Terence Barter, Compaq product manager at Tarsus.

"The Compaq Evo N150 packs all the technology and features integral to everyday use in a compact size, making it an ideal solution for field and sales representatives on the go, and for personnel regularly taking work to and from the office."

The Evo Notebook N150 is Microsoft certified for the ultimate in compatibility with Microsoft Windows ME operating system. The full-sized keyboard is easy to use, and the easy-access Internet buttons allow one-touch access to the Internet, intranet, and commonly used applications.

Taking advantage of the latest plug-and-play technology, the Evo Notebook N150 series features two integrated USB ports built into the system board for instant, no-hassle connections to USB devices.

Other features of the N150 include fast IrDA, an environmentally friendly design, and worldwide availability and serviceability.

"The N150 series combines powerful features and a compact form factor in a price-performance combination that is ideal for business customers seeking an economical yet highly mobile unit," Barter points out.

"The Compaq Evo Notebook N400c, on the other hand, is designed with the highly mobile professional in mind, and packs mainstream computing features into an ultra-thin and lightweight form factor," Barter continues.

The N400c`s features include low voltage Intel Mobile Pentium III processors with SpeedStep technology, a large bright 12.1-inch TFT display, large hard drives, a full-sized keyboard, and dual battery support. Furthermore, it features a full set of system ports, optional Mobile Expansion Unit (MEU) and compatibility with all Armada E and M series options and docking solutions. Additional expansion is achieved with Compaq`s innovative MultiPort, which accepts user replaceable MultiPort modules ranging in functionality from wireless communications to enhanced security options.

Barter concludes: "All these features combine to simplify the highly mobile professional`s computing experience and making the Evo notebook range an ideal travelling companion."

Tarsus Technologies

Tarsus Technologies is the distribution arm of MB Technologies Limited -- a company listed on the Johannesburg Stock Exchange and one of SA`s leading IT groups.

The founding company of the group, Tarsus Technologies, was established in 1985 by Leo Baxter, and was involved in the development and sale of software before diversifying into hardware distribution.

In 1989 Baxter sold a majority share to M+PD Electronics, which was subsequently sold to Siltek. In the early 1990s, Tarsus expanded its hardware sales, and was appointed distributor for OKI, Samsung and Compaq. In 1992, Baxter bought back Tarsus, selling a majority share to Persetel, and in 1994 he took advantage of an opportunity for a management buyout and repurchased the company with Mike McGrath acquiring an equal share.

The company was now growing strongly, and MB Technologies was formed as a holding company to cater for the group expanding and diversifying its operations into new areas.

Today, Tarsus Technologies is one of SA`s leading hardware distributors and widely recognised by the channel for its service ethos, product knowledge, excellent support and channel focus.

With an executive board comprising Mike McGrath (the founder of M+PD and past MD of Siltek), Leo Baxter, Guy Whitcroft, Pierre Spies, and Jamie Scott, Tarsus` management team is arguably the most experienced IT distribution team of any company in the country.
