Compaq in Europe, Middle East and Africa (EMEA), the region`s largest enterprise storage company, today extended the reach of storage area networks (SANs) across the globe.
The new SANworks Data Replication Manager (DRM) uses qualified Fibre Channel and Internet Protocol (FC-IP) technology to implement data replication networks. It enhances data recovery solutions with greater flexibility and reduced costs on a global scale.
Kim Howlett, Business Unit Manager, Compaq Enterprise Storage Group, commented: "Our customers require business continuance and data recovery assurance that works within existing IT infrastructures. SANworks Data Replication Manager ensures that if there is a disaster at a primary site a company`s data are safe on the remote storage system. They are available for immediate connection to an alternate host anywhere in the world via FC-IP. Data are replicated either synchronously or asynchronously each time a transaction occurs to provide global data protection and recovery capabilities. The customer simply connects to a remote storage system, and the business is back in operation."
Howlett added: "Compaq showcased the world`s first working global SAN in September 2001. The technology demonstration at our EMEA storage Competency Centre in Nijmegen in The Netherlands was a breakthrough SAN operating on the continents of Australia, Europe and America. Now customers can exploit FC-IP technology for real."
In addition to DRM, Compaq in EMEA also announced today a range of other storage software and hardware enhancements that improve the ability of enterprises to manage their data. These include:
. The SANworksTM Virtual Replicator - a host-based storage management application that runs on Windows NT & Windows 2000 platforms. Virtual Replicator provides storage virtualisation, online volume growth and instant point-in-time replication (snapshot) capabilities. These functions are managed through a set of simple to use Microsoft Management Console (MMC)-based wizards.
. The Virtualized Storage Management for Exchange 2000 and Virtualized Storage Management for SQL Server 2000 - increases the customer`s level of data protection by providing an additional, extremely rapid, recovery alternative to restoring from tape. Additionally, these solutions will show how customers can maximise operational efficiency by dynamically growing a storage pool without needing to shut down the application.
. The StorageWorksTM FCA2101 and FCA2354 - Fibre Channel PCI host bus adapters support Windows NT, Windows 2000, Tru64 Unix and OpenVMS systems with 2Gbps capability, while preserving existing investment with the ability to operate in 1Gbs backward compatible mode.
. The SANworksTM Secure Path - extends support to new StorageWorksTM Modular SAN Array (MSA) 1000 storage solution in a Microsoft Windows environment. Customers using the MSA1000 can protect the path between their application and data using this newest version of Secure Path.
